Why it works (1): Persistence with adaptation

In September 2025 I supported staff at Mossbrook School to implement the 3C’s of rapport-based communication during a two week “Rapport-Based Communication” focus time. The impact of this intervention upon both practitioners and young people was assessed using questionnaires at the start and end of the two week period. 53 members of staff completed questionnaires and their insights are revealed in this series of posts:

Persistence with adaptation

Staff who succeeded [in finding more rapport with the person they support] adjusted their approach continuously based on child responses while maintaining commitment. Those who either gave up OR kept trying in the same way struggled [to find rapport].

Pattern observed:

initial rejection

→ mirroring from distance

→ gradual acceptance

→ child-initiated contact (sometimes days later).

Rapport-based communication can support you to find more connection and relationship with people with additional and complex needs. Contact Matt to find out more.
